A stunning first-half free-kick from Richard Kotey proved decisive as defending champions Bibiani GoldStars edged Hohoe United 1-0 at the Hohoe Sports Stadium on Sunday afternoon in a Matchday 15 encounter of the Ghana Premier League.
The visitors arrived in Hohoe under pressure, having struggled for consistency and endured a poor run of away form this season.
However, they showed greater purpose and discipline against a determined Hohoe United side that was hoping to build on earlier home successes.
Hohoe started brightly, pressing high and enjoying early spells of possession as they looked to unsettle the champions.
The hosts created a couple of half-chances but lacked the cutting edge in the final third, allowing GoldStars to gradually grow into the game.
The breakthrough came in the 33rd minute through a moment of individual brilliance. GoldStars were awarded a free-kick just outside the penalty area after a foul on the edge of the box.
Kotey stepped up and curled a superb effort over the wall and beyond the reach of the Hohoe goalkeeper, sending the travelling supporters into celebration and handing the Miners a crucial lead.
GoldStars tightened up defensively after the opener, limiting Hohoe’s attacking threat and going into the break with a slender advantage.
The second half saw the home side push men forward in search of an equaliser, but they were repeatedly frustrated by a well-organised GoldStars backline.
