Heart of Lions head coach Bashir Hayford has described the team’s 2-1 defeat to Nations FC over the weekend as a missed opportunity in their title aspiration.
The Kpando-based club travelled to Dr. Kwame Kyei Sports Complex on Saturday to honour their Week 13 fixture of the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League campaign.
A win in that game would have propelled Heart of Lions to the top of the league table, at least temporarily, to put pressure on current leaders Medeama SC.
Speaking in a post-match interview, Coach Bashir Hayford shared his disappointment, insisting that it is unacceptable that his team always messes up the opportunity to go top of the league table.
“I’m very disappointed. We have had the opportunity to jump to the top five times, and honestly, anytime we get the opportunity, we mess up. We have to go to the drawing board,” the experienced tactician said.
In his assessment of the defeat to Nations FC, Coach Bashir Hayford blamed the senior players in his team, accusing them of complacency.
“I think because of the winning, we are winning my top players, they call themselves senior players. I think they are joking. I should put them on their feet. The complacency is too much, and that’s why we lost. Honestly, my so-called experienced players have let me down,” Bashir Hayford added.
The result from the weekend leaves Heart of Lions in third position in the Ghana Premier League table with 23 points, three less than Medeama SC.
