Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has boldly predicted Nigeria will lift the trophy at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, expressing confidence in the team’s quality during the CAF Diaspora Tour event in London.
The Fulham star said he believes coach Ãric Chelle’s squad has what it takes to go all the way.
AFCON 2025 begins on December 21 in Morocco and concludes on January 18, 2026. Nigeria, the three-time champions, were runners-up in the previous tournament after losing 2-1 to Ivory Coast in the final.
Reflecting on that near miss, Iwobi said: “The last time at AFCON in Ivory Coast, we were really close. But the only way we can improve on that is to win it. We have the players to do it, we believe we can, we just have to prove it.”
At 29, Iwobi has represented Nigeria at three AFCON tournaments since debuting in 2015 and has established himself as a regular under coach Chelle. With 91 caps, he remains one of the team’s most experienced and consistent performers.
Iwobi also spoke on the importance of the CAF Diaspora Tour in London and Tokyo, underlining how the tour helps showcase African football’s talent and entertainment value to a wider global audience. He noted the strong turnout in London as evidence that “Europe appreciates what Africa can bring.”
Although Nigeria failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cupâlosing to DR Congo in the African playoffs- Iwobi is clearly setting his sights on AFCON glory and is determined to help the Super Eagles reclaim their place among the continent’s elite.
