Former Ghana midfielder Alfred Duncan has disclosed that he turned down an offer to return to the Black Stars after his premature retirement from international football.
The Venezia midfielder, who made his Ghana debut in 2016 during an Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Mozambique, stepped away from national team duties in 2019.
In a recent interview, the former Inter Milan and Sassuolo player revealed that the last two Black Stars coaches approached him about a potential comeback, but he declined as he had already made up his mind.
Yes I think for the past two years the two new coaches that came both reached out to me and then they wanted to work with me but for me it was very difficult to go back to the national team because the expectation were really high and Ihad already made a decision were Iwas stable with Iwanted to be in the position not going to the national team also give me other benefit, he told Sporty FM.
He further explained that one of the major reasons behind his decision was the opportunity to spend more time with his family during international breaks, something he had missed while playing for Ghana.
During the international break I am able to spend more time with my family as well for me that was one of the best decisions I ever made because with my family Iwas having less time with them and making that decision really helped me a lot spending more time with them so Iwasn't willing to make a step back to abandon that situation. It was really difficult for me to change my mind, so I just decided to stick to my initial idea of not going back to the national team so that I could spend more time with my family, he added.Despite admitting that rejecting the offer was not an easy decision, Duncan remained firm in his choice, prioritizing personal stability over a return to the Black Stars.
Alfred Duncan made nine appearances for Ghana before retiring from international football.
