Madam Abla Dzifa Gomashie, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, has highlighted health tourism as a key driver of Ghana’s socio-economic development.
She said health tourism was strategic to economic diversification, healthcare improvement, job creation and national development, making it central to Ghana’s broader growth agenda.
The Minister made the remarks during an engagement in Accra with representatives of the Turkish Investment Center and other key stakeholders.
The engagement formed part of a broader visit by the delegation, which announced interest in expanding investments in Ghana, particularly in health, defence, agriculture, information technology and tourism-related infrastructure.
Madam Gomashie said health and tourism were closely linked, noting that while some people travelled to Ghana for medical treatment, others moved from different parts of the country to major cities for healthcare services and often faced accommodation challenges.
She said there was an urgent need for affordable accommodation facilities to support patients, caregivers and medical tourists across the country.
“To ensure people get the care they need, there must be low-cost sleeping facilities that are not financially burdensome. The availability of small-budget accommodation facilities nationwide will significantly enhance both domestic and international health tourism,” she said.
Madam Gomashie assured the delegation of Ghana’s commitment to providing litigation-free lands to boost investor confidence and enable effective deployment of resources and expertise.
She reaffirmed the Ministry’s readiness to facilitate further engagements and receive detailed presentations on proposed investments.
As part of Ghana’s expectations, the Minister formally requested the development of a 5,000-capacity hotel in any part of the country, alongside the establishment of a tourism and hospitality school to serve Ghana and the sub-region.
Alhaji Abdul Nasiru-Deen, Ghana’s Ambassador to Turkey, who led the delegation, said the Turkish Investment Center was a private institution supported by the Government of Turkey to promote investments across Africa through public-private partnership arrangements.
He said although several investment opportunities had been allocated to other sectors, two proposals were selected for discussion because of their relevance to the tourism sector.
Alhaji Nasiru-Deen later sought clarity on the Ministry’s roadmap for implementing the proposed projects and said the delegation’s investment scope also covered food production and media, should further opportunities arise.
