
A total of 8,288 students who pursued various undergraduate and postgraduate programmes at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), have graduated at a ceremony for the 2024 graduating class.
Postgraduate degrees, first degrees, diplomas, and certificates were conferred on the graduands at the first session of the 30th Congregation, held at the Jophus Anamuah-Mensah Conference Centre on the North Campus of the University at Winneba.
Out of the total number, 6,890 students, representing 83 per cent, were awarded first degrees, 1,062 students, representing 13 per cent, obtained postgraduate degrees, while 336 students, representing four per cent, received diplomas.
In the first-degree category, 816 graduands obtained First Class honours, 2,259 earned Second Class Upper Division, 2,273 attained Second Class Lower Division, 1,217 received Third Class, while 325 obtained Pass degrees.
A total of 2,159 students from the Faculty of Health, Allied Sciences and Home Economics Education, the School of Business, and the Faculty of Applied Behavioural Sciences in Education were presented with diplomas and first degrees on Wednesday.
On Thursday, 2,033 students from the Faculty of Science Education, the School of Education and Life-Long Learning, the School of Communication and Media Studies, and the Faculty of Ghanaian Languages Education were graduated.
On Friday, 2,131 students from the Faculty of Social Sciences Education, the Faculty of Liberal and Social Studies Education, and the Faculty of Foreign Languages Education received diplomas and first degrees.
On Saturday, the final day of the session, 1,965 students from the School of Graduate Studies and the School of Creative Arts were presented for graduation.
The School of Graduate Studies awarded 1,062 postgraduate degrees, comprising 34 PhDs, 361 MPhils, 11 MBAs, 36 MAs, 15 Executive Masters, one MFA, three MTechs, 413 M.Ed. degrees, 173 Postgraduate Diplomas in Education (PGDE) and 15 Postgraduate Diplomas in Tertiary-Level Higher Education (PGDTLHE).
The Vice-Chancellor of UEW, Prof. Stephen Jobson Mitchual, commended the graduands for braving numerous challenges and demonstrating determination and resilience to attain the significant milestone.
“We celebrate not only your achievements but also the unwavering support of your parents, guardians, spouses and all stakeholders, including faculty, administrators and staff, whose dedication made this day possible. Management is deeply grateful to everyone,” he said.
Prof. Mitchual urged the graduands, as they stepped into the world as teachers and professionals, to uphold the University’s motto, “Education for Service,” and to allow integrity, humility, excellence and respect to guide them in all their endeavours.
“Be diligent, shine brightly and embrace the responsibility of being ambassadors of UEW, shaping the future of Ghana and beyond. May the Good Lord direct your steps, grant you wisdom and purpose to lead with integrity, create with humility and live lives that inspire others,” he added.
The Vice-Chancellor said with the support of the Government of Ghana, the University was rehabilitating its five-kilometre internal road network across its campuses and would soon commence the construction of a mini sports stadium.
He disclosed that UEW had outlined a bold set of development projects aimed at enhancing academic delivery, improving staff and student experience, and strengthening institutional capacity.
These include the construction of a modern Business School Complex, a College for Distance and e-Learning (CODeL) block to advance flexible learning, a Graduate School block, and a Faculty block at the Ajumako Campus.
He also mentioned three-storey buildings at Cape Coast, Kumasi and Kukurantumi, which are at various stages of completion and, when completed, would serve as study centres for CODeL.
Other projects include a state-of-the-art library complex to enrich research and learning, the expansion of the UEW Inclusive Basic School, a comprehensive ICT Building Complex to support digital transformation, and the refurbishment of Biology and Physics laboratories to strengthen science education.
“These projects reflect UEW’s commitment to continuous growth, academic excellence and a truly transformative campus experience,” Prof. Mitchual stated.
On health infrastructure, he announced that the newly constructed UEW Hospital had become operational, having commenced services on June 4, 2025.
“We are equally proud to acknowledge the generous support of our partners, especially World Medical Relief, for their remarkable donation of medical equipment soon to be delivered,” he said.
He also expressed gratitude to the Ghana Health Service for its invaluable contribution of additional medical equipment worth GH¢1 million.
