Togbe Afede XIV, Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State, has commended the government for its “Big Push” initiative, which aims to improve the road network across the country. He described the policy as a crucial step toward enhancing national development, particularly in the agricultural sector.
Togbe Afede noted that accessible, motorable roads were essential for ensuring that farm produce was transported swiftly and efficiently from rural communities to major markets.
Improved infrastructure, he said, would not only reduce post-harvest losses but also boost farmer incomes and strengthen the agricultural value chain.
The Agbogbomefia made the remarks when he accepted the invitation to chair the 41st National Farmers’ Day celebration, scheduled to take place in Ho, the Volta Regional capital.
He expressed delight that the region was hosting the national event and praised the dedication and resilience of Ghanaian farmers, who continue to drive the economy despite numerous challenges.
Togbe Afede urged stakeholders, policymakers, and development partners to prioritize rural infrastructure, emphasizing that agriculture remains the backbone of the nation.
He called for sustained investment in roads, irrigation, storage facilities, and technology to transform the sector and empower the country’s farmers.
He decried the situation where some jurisdiction only four per cent of famers could feed the entire country extending into the global space and wondered why Ghana’s population of 44 per cent into agriculture is inadequate to feed the people and had to rely on exportation.
“If population of farmers can feed themselves, why no Ghana,” he said, calling demanding lots of work to be covered.
The 41st National Farmers’ Day celebration is expected to bring together farmers, agribusiness players, policymakers, and citizens to honour the contributions of Ghana’s hardworking agricultural workforce.
