Dreams FC’s inspiring campaign in the CAF Confederation Cup was eventually dashed by a 3:0 defeat in the hands of an experienced Zamalek side at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi on Sunday, April 28, 2024.
‘The Still Believe Boys’ came into the second leg with an impressive showing in the first leg in Cairo, where they held Zamalek to a goalless draw, setting up a tough contest in Kumasi.
Dreams FC started the game on a more purposeful note as they were calm and composed in the first 10 minutes of the game, with some clear-cut chances falling their way, but they failed to capitalize on that, which led to the away side taking advantage of that by taking the lead in the 12th minute with Hamza Mathlouthi scoring from a corner kick.
The early goal dimmed the progress of ‘the Still Believe Boys’ as they were bamboozled by the experience of the Zamalek side, who went pressing and pushing for the second goal and eventually broke the back line of the Dreams defence as they added a second in the 27th minute courtesy of a goal from Samson Akinyoola.
The first half had Zamalek written all over it as they dominated possession, which saw them take a two-goal advantage into the second half. Zamalek maintained their composure in the second half as they did in the first half by scoring their third goal of the night to secure a 3:0 victory.
Zamalek’s victory against Dreams FC sends them into the final of the CAF Confederation Cup as they wait for the for the winner of the match between USM Alger and RS Berkane.
