Faustilove Appiah Kannin addressing the gathering
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of the Obuasi Municipal Assembly, Faustilove Appiah Kannin, has launched the ‘Nkoko Nketekete’ Programme under the government’s Feed Ghana Programme to promote poultry farming and create jobs in the municipality.
The programme is expected to directly benefit 200 people, with the municipality receiving a total of 10,000 broiler birds. Each beneficiary will be given 50 birds to help them start or expand small-scale poultry businesses.
Launching the initiative at a brief ceremony at the forecourt of the Obuasi Municipal Assembly, Madam Appiah Kannin announced that the distribution of the birds had begun and would be completed within five days. She stressed that the selection of beneficiaries was done without political considerations.
According to her, the programme is a government intervention aimed at improving livelihoods and boosting local food production, adding that all beneficiaries were selected on a non-partisan basis.
The MCE disclosed that the next phase of the programme would introduce layer birds into the municipality, urging beneficiaries to take advantage of the initiative to build sustainable poultry enterprises. She noted that the success of the programme would help make poultry products more available and affordable in Obuasi.
She expressed gratitude to President John Mahama and the government for the initiative, and cautioned beneficiaries to take the project seriously and make it successful.
Ahead of the distribution, beneficiaries were taken through a one-day capacity-building workshop to equip them with basic poultry management skills. Officials from the Municipal Department of Agriculture also announced that Agricultural Extension Officers would be deployed across various zones to provide technical support and monitor the progress of the birds.
The ceremony was attended by the Municipal Coordinating Director, Madam Joyce Akosua Angmorteh, the Presiding Member of the Assembly, James Adabour, Assembly Members, and staff of the Obuasi Municipal Assembly.
