Napo and Bawumia during their recent campaign tour in the Ashanti Region
FORMER VICE President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, comfortably secured victory in Manhyia South Constituency during the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential election on Saturday.
He managed to amass a staggering 453 votes, representing 79.17% of the total valid votes cast, to secure the first spot in the much-talked-about party elections, which was generally peaceful.
Kennedy Agyapong had 65 votes, representing 11.36%; Dr. Bryan Acheampong garnered 51 votes, representing 8.92%; Kwabena Agyepong obtained 3 votes, representing 0.52%; and Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum had zero.
Political pundits in Kumasi have attributed Dr. Bawumia’s overwhelming victory in Manhyia South Constituency to his 2024 running mate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, nicknamed as ‘Napo’.
Dr. Prempeh, it would be recalled, represented the people of Manhyia South in parliament for four consecutive terms before bowing out to partner Dr. Bawumia as running mate for the 2024 polls.
During the campaign ahead of the NPP presidential primary, Napo visited Manhyia South Constituency, where he has strong influence, on several occasions, to campaign for Dr. Bawumia.
In all his visits, he admonished the Manhyia South delegates to massively cast their ballots for his boss, Dr. Bawumia, whom he described as hard working, patriotic, bold and a visionary leader.
Napo also informed the delegates that Dr. Bawumia aside being competent, is massively popular and has a nationwide appeal, therefore he is the right person to lead the NPP to victory in 2028.
The Manhyia South NPP delegates, who hold Napo in high esteem, heeded to his advice as they gave Dr. Bawumia 79.17% of the valid votes, helping him to emerge as NPP flagbearer.
Meanwhile, Manhyia South, with the 79.17% votes, finished second in terms of votes for Dr. Bawumia in the Ashanti Region behind Effiduase Asokore, who had 91.55% of votes for Dr. Bawumia.
