The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called on the Electoral Commission (EC) to immediately resume the collation of parliamentary results for the rest of the constituencies that have been under contention, in order to uphold the democratic will of voters who participated in the just ended elections.
Speaking at a press conference at the party’s headquarters in Accra yesterday, a former National Chairman of the party, Peter Mac Manu, said resumption of the collation exercise will help settle any lingering uncertainties that have characterised the December 7 elections.
He said verifiable data from their collated pink sheet results showed that NPP’s parliamentary candidates from the constituencies won the seats in all the areas that have been put on hold by the EC due to disruptions by alleged thugs of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
He, therefore, implored the National Election Security Taskforce to provide adequate security at the collation centres to facilitate peaceful collation of results.
“We are very certain that our parliamentary candidates in the above-mentioned constituencies won the elections. This conclusion is based on verifiable data from the pink sheets, as we have consistently demonstrated,” he said.
“It is, therefore, our expectation that the EC would immediately resume the collation exercise,” he stated.
The 12 constituencies where the parliamentary results have been disputed after the December 7 elections are the Ahafo Ano South West, Akwatia, Suhum, Fanteakwa North, Nsawam-Adoagyiri, and Techiman.
The rest are Ablekuma North, Okaikwei Central, Tema Central, Dome-Kwabenya, Ahafo Ano North and Obuasi East.
He said though the NPP candidates won other constituencies under contention including Fanteakwa North, Akwatia and Suhum, the NDC hoodlums have continuously disrupted collation of results at the centres because they have lost those parliamentary seats.
He said the alleged thugs, who are supporters of the NDC, engaged in acts including destroying all pink sheets they could lay their hands on, destroying ballot boxes and other electoral materials, and beating up electoral officers and party representatives who challenged them.
According to him, other strategies employed by the thugs include threatening the life of any person who disagrees with them; compelling the EC Returning Officers to declare NDC candidates as winners of the parliamentary elections; chasing out members of the National Elections Security Taskforce; taking charge of the collation process and ensuring the collation is aborted when they realise that their candidate has lost.
Citing examples from some of these constituencies where some of the supporters of the NDC disrupted the collation processes, the NPP said data on the face of the pink sheets from all the 148 polling stations in Tema Central Constituency shows clearly that the NPP parliamentary candidate, Charles Forson, won the parliamentary elections for the constituency with 55 votes difference, obtaining 18,870 votes to beat the NDC’s candidate, Ebi Bright, who polled 18,815 votes.
“The NPP parliamentary candidate and incumbent MP for the Okaikwei Central Constituency, Patrick Yaw Boamah, won the parliamentary elections with a vote margin of 1,446 vote difference. After collating results from 138 polling stations out of the total of 141, the NPP candidate, Patrick Boamah obtained 20,229 votes as against the NDC’s Baba Saddiq, who polled 18,783 votes with only three polling stations remaining,” Mr. Mac Manu said.
According to the party, its records show that even if all the votes in the three polling stations are added to the NDC’s candidate, it would not offset the vote difference.
“The NPP parliamentary candidate, Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, has won the parliamentary seat with 414 vote difference.
“According to data collated from all the 281 polling stations in the Ablekuma North Constituency, Akua Afriyie of the NPP obtained a total of 34,613 votes to beat her contender, Ewurabena Aubynn of the NDC who obtained 34,199 votes. We have scanned all the 281 pink sheets issued to us by the presiding officers of the various polling stations before transporting them to the EC Collation Centre,” he stated.
He, therefore, called on the NDC to demonstrate responsible leadership by calling their supporters to order.
