Regional Chairmen of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have called on the Party’s Council of Elders to intervene and caution key stakeholders against making unguarded statements following recent remarks made by NDC stalwart Kwesi Ahwoi.
During an event in Accra for Prof. Opoku-Agyemang, Mr Ahwoi suggested that she should be prepared for any scenario that could lead to her to the presidency, leading to criticism from some NDC members who interpreted his comments as implying a lack of confidence in John Dramani Mahama’s potential presidency.
In response to the backlash, Mr Ahwoi issued an apology to both John Dramani Mahama and Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang regarding his remarks in the viral video.
The Regional Chairmen, in a statement on Monday, expressed their disapproval of Mr Ahwoi’s remarks, describing them as not only ‘unelderly’ but potentially divisive in the party’s journey towards victory in the 2024 elections. They condemned the comments and emphasized that they do not reflect the party’s values or principles.
They highlighted the merit of selecting Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang as the running mate for John Dramani Mahama, stressing that the decision was made through a rigorous and inclusive process with unanimous support from the National Executive Committee and Regional Membership.
The Regional Chairmen underscored the importance of unity and solidarity within the party, calling for the Party’s Council of Elders to intervene and discourage the spread of unguarded statements by key stakeholders.
They emphasized the need to maintain a united front and focus on the upcoming 2024 elections with a commitment to unity, inclusivity, and respect.
