The Minerals Commission has commended Zijin Golden Ridge Limited for adhering to high standards of sustainable and responsible mining at the Akyem gold operation, urging the company to sustain engagement with host communities to ensure stable operations.
Speaking at the company’s end-of-year stakeholder dinner, the Principal Inspector at the Koforidua office of the Minerals Commission, Regina Abbey, said initial concerns over the transition at the mine had eased following Zijin’s operational approach.
“When we learnt that Zijin was going to take over the Akyem mine, we were a bit skeptical. Now we realise that Zijin’s operations are entirely different.
“We are hoping that Zijin will continue to mine sustainably, taking into consideration the health and safety of the workers, and then also protecting the general public,” Abbey said.
The event brought together traditional leaders, community representatives, regulators and the media.
Zijin Golden Ridge Limited, a subsidiary of Zijin Mining Group Co. Limited, assumed operations of the Akyem Gold Mine in April 2025. Since the takeover, the company says it has focused on operational continuity and sustainability at one of the country’s largest gold-producing assets.
Zijin plans to lift mining throughput from about 27 million tonnes currently to 37 million tonnes in 2026 and 53 million tonnes by 2028. Gold production is projected to increase from around five tonnes this year to 8.5 tonnes next year, rising to 10 tonnes in 2028, with longer-term plans to scale output further.
