Public Employment Centres opened in Techiman and Berekum

The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, in collaboration with the European Union (EU), the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), has officially handed over two new Public Employment Centres (PECs) in Techiman and Berekum.

The modern facilities aim to improve Ghana’s employment ecosystem, offering career guidance, job placement services, and skills development programs for youth and jobseekers.

The PECs are designed to act as hubs for employment services, providing jobseekers with career counselling, skills training, and access to job opportunities. Employers will also benefit from talent identification and development services to drive economic growth.

Dr. Dirk Aßmann, GIZ Ghana’s Country Director, said: “These centres will not only help jobseekers secure employment but also empower them to build sustainable and meaningful careers. With the provision of essential logistics and equipment, the Labour Department can now extend services to remote areas, ensuring a sustainable and responsive employment service framework.”

The centres were developed under the Jobs, Migration, and Development (JMD) project, co-funded by the EU and BMZ. The initiative aligns with Ghana’s national development goals, leveraging partnerships to deliver impactful results.

“Through these PECs, we are equipping Ghanaian youth with the tools to thrive locally, reducing the need for irregular migration in search of opportunities. These centers symbolize our commitment to sustainable development,” said Massimo Mina, Head of Cooperation at the EU Delegation to Ghana.

Regional benefits and sustainability

Local leaders, including Bono East Regional Minister Kwasi Adu-Gyan, welcomed the PECs, pledging to promote their use among jobseekers and employers. He noted that the facilities would significantly enhance the Labour Department’s work in the region.

Equipped with solar energy and modern infrastructure, the PECs are designed for long-term sustainability.

The PECs are part of the EU-Ghana Pact for Skills Programme, which focuses on equipping Ghanaians with skills for emerging sectors such as digital technology and green jobs, in line with the Green Jobs Strategy 2021–2025.
