Ghanaians, deeply committed to upholding democratic ideals and ensuring the sanctity of free and fair elections, gathered to launch The 7th March Free and Fair Elections March.
This march, aimed at reinforcing democratic values and promoting a peaceful election period, aligns with Ghana’s vision of a stable and just society.
A symbolic gathering is planned for the 23rd of November, when over 10,000 Ghanaians will come together at Independence Square.
Around the iconic Arc of Independence, they will march seven times—a nod to the biblical story from Joshua chapter 6, where the children of Israel circled Jericho seven times, leading to the collapse of its walls. This gesture represents a call to dismantle barriers that hinder peace and integrity within Ghana’s democracy.
Among the vibrant crowd supporting this cause is the Ghana Supporters Union, a group dedicated to fostering peace, rallying with messages of calm ahead of the December elections.
Professor Ransford Gyampo, Chair of the peace initiative, emphasized the significance of this movement in bolstering Ghana’s democratic resilience.
“This movement is essential,” he remarked, “to remind us all that we are stakeholders in democracy, and to sustain it, we must safeguard peace and mutual respect.”
The event’s convener, Nene Omanye Amoako Attah, described the march as a proactive step toward securing peace, urging musicians, clergy, and business leaders across the nation to support the cause and foster stability.
A representative from the Ghana Supporters Union added, “We believe in the power of our voices and actions to promote peace. This election is not just about political choices; it’s about preserving our values and future.”
As December’s elections approach, the peace march has underscored the collective resolve of Ghanaians to protect the integrity of their democracy. Through the support of citizens, advocates, and leaders, this initiative seeks to create an atmosphere of calm, trust, and civic duty—further advancing Ghana’s democratic journey.
