Patricia Appiagyei, the current Member of Parliament for Asokwa Constituency in the Ashanti region, has underscored the critical link between her candidature and sustained development in the area.
As the New Patriotic Party’s Parliamentary Primaries approach on January 27, Ms.Appiagyei passionately urged delegates to endorse her candidacy, emphasizing that the ongoing developmental initiatives she has spearheaded can only be effectively continued under her leadership.
During an exclusive interview on a local radio/television station ‘Wontumi’in Kumasi, she highlighted her multifaceted contributions to her constituents, ranging from fostering financial literacy among young girls to sponsoring female students through university education. Notably, she played a key role in facilitating the construction of roads in the constituency.
“To avoid disruptions in development when someone else is voted for, I appeal to you to vote for me to continue my work. I have served and worked hard for you. I appeal to you to allow me continue the good work we have started to a point where Asokwa will become an enviable constituency to all.”
To enhance employment opportunities for her constituents, she plans to establish a job center that will provide comprehensive training and address unemployment issues. Additionally, in a bid to promote digitalization within her constituency, she has revamped six computer laboratories and classroom blocks.
So far, she has successfully guided 350 individuals—both men and women—through skills training programs. Some of them have found valuable opportunities in agriculture, while nearly 19 people have gained entry into various security services. In the realm of infrastructure, she has set a goal to kickstart the construction of inner roads around the Unity Oil enclave by March, aiming to improve accessibility for the community.
Expressing her commitment to advancing Asokwa, she acknowledges the challenges faced by newcomers in parliament, emphasizing that the legislative environment can be daunting for first-timers. Despite the ongoing development in Asokwa, she recognizes the necessity for more progress and states her intention to continue working towards the constituency’s betterment.
Addressing her decision to run for re-election, she points out that a significant number of seasoned parliamentarians, totaling 18, are leaving the house. This departure could potentially weaken the majority side, and she believes that maintaining a balance of experienced and new members is crucial for the effective functioning of the ninth parliament. “If we are to allow all the experience ones to leave, we may suffer in the ninth parliament,” she said.
The governing New Patriotic Party’s delegates are set to cast their votes on January 27, 2024, to select parliamentary candidates for the upcoming general elections in December.
With 33 sitting MPs running unopposed, the primaries will determine the candidates representing the party in constituencies where they currently hold seats. Appiagyei’s appeal for endorsement resonates with her dedication to advancing Asokwa into an exemplary constituency for all.
