President John Mahama has firmly declared that his government and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) holds no animosity against the Judiciary and the legal fraternity in the country despite several criticisms in recent past.
At a meeting with the Ghana Bar Association on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, the president expressed his government’s willingness to work with the Bar to ensure there is rule of law and justice.
The President averred that perception about the NDC having problems with the Judiciary is not a true representation.
“Government is open to working with you particularly on our side of the political divide, there is this perception that we have a problem with the legal fraternity and things like that. I think if you look at the kind of people, Marrieta and all of us sitting here, we are not people who have any such animosity towards the Judiciary and the legal fraternity.
“So, our doors are opened, our hands are opened and if you think that there is anything you should bring to our attention don’t hesitate at all,” President Mahama stated.
Referencing some past surveys which findings painted a negative picture about the Judiciary, the President urged members of the Bar to change the narrative.
“Several surveys asking Ghanaians what their opinion of the Judiciary is have not come out positively and I believe that is it is a duty for all of us to work to make sure that we have a judiciary that is respected.
“Year in and year out we hear GHC 12 billion misappropriated, GHC 15 billion and how we deal with these cases are very difficult because of the constitutional procedure and parliamentary accounts committee and all that but after that has happened, we must have a fast-track court where we are able to deal with it so that we deter people from just misusing government funds like that,” he added.
While he was a presidential candidate, John Mahama is on record to have accused the past administration of packing the courts with party affiliates in order to evade accountability after leaving office.
“Currently, the judiciary is packed with NPP-inclined judges because this government has carried out a deliberate policy of putting their people onto the bench.”
“He [Akufo-Addo] has appointed the biggest number of judges onto the bench, it is more than 80 towards 100 and counting. You can see what the current president has done.”
“He has packed the court, and we know they have packed the court because they want to avoid accountability after they have left office,” President Mahama said in September 2023.
