
The outgoing Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), General Thomas Oppong-Peprah, has formally transferred authority to his successor, Brigadier General William Agyapong.
The handover ceremony took place at a guard of honour parade organized by the GAF at Burma Camp, where General Oppong-Peprah was bid a fond farewell and honoured for his distinguished service. The parade, which featured 98 troops from the army, navy, and air force, was inspected by General Oppong-Peprah.
During the ceremony, the Ministry of Defence, GAF officers, personnel, and civilian staff, along with the GAF Command and Staff College and allied security agencies, presented citations and gifts to General Oppong-Peprah in recognition of his leadership.

The farewell parade was followed by a pulling-out ceremony to mark General Oppong-Peprah’s retirement from GAF service. In his farewell address, General Oppong-Peprah expressed his deep gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama, former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the Ministry of Defence, public agencies, heads of allied security agencies, the clergy, the media, and his family for their unwavering support throughout his tenure.

He urged the leadership of the GAF to maintain professionalism and to offer full support to the new CDS, ensuring continued transformation within the military. He also called on the GAF and allied security agencies to assist the newly appointed CDS in performing his duties with diligence and dedication, contributing to the GAF’s ongoing transformation.

The colourful ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including the Minister of Defence, Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, and the Inspector General of Police (IGP).
Also present were heads of allied security services, retired CDS officers, members of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Defence, the Council of State, the National Security Council, and a delegation of traditional leaders from the Bono region.
Earlier in the day, the Army headquarters also held a pulling-out ceremony for the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Bismarck Kwasi Onwona, as he made way for the newly appointed Chief of Army Staff, Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu.
