The leadership of the Industrial and Commercial Workers’ Union, (ICU) Ghana, has called on government to engage labour to resolve any industrial dispute.
According to the ICU, this will ensure productivity at the workplace and boost investor confidence.
General Secretary of the Union Morgan Ayawine made the call when he was addressed members of ICU in the Ashanti and Bono regions as part of its regional conference ahead of its 12th Quadrennial Delegates Conference scheduled in August this year.
“In these challenging times which we find ourselves, every effort must be made by government, employers and labour to address labour related concerns with speed and alacrity in order to forestall any unnecessary actions at the workplace,” he said.
The ICU-Ghana General Secretary emphasized the need for equal partnership on the side of the Union and Management for effective collaboration, since Capital and Labour stand on equal pedestal to merge and produce, to bring about the profitability of the business.
He said, Capital standing on its own cannot produce and make profit, neither can Labour standing alone produce and earn income.
“It is therefore logical that these two indispensable components of business merge on equal footing to enable a successful business to be conducted.”
“I therefore advise all workers and employers to be guided always by the dictates of the Collective Agreement and the Labour Law which are our key tools and do the right thing at all times so that either party would be justified in the end”.
On the government’s 24-hour economy policy, the ICU-Ghana, described it as a laudable idea which will lead to job creation.
“This noble intention is for job creation and sustainability in the country to improve income and social protection of Ghanaian workers.”
Meanwhile, the Deputy General Secretary of ICU in charge of Operations, Emmanuel Benima represented the Union in the Western and Eastern regions while the Deputy General Secretary in charge of Administration, Samuel Ananga also represented the Union in the Volta and Central regions.
They encouraged the members in the various regions to ensure cordial and conducive working relationship with Management.
