The Inspector General of Police (IGP), COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has declared an all-out war on crimes related to illegal mining, also known as “galamsey.”
The IGP said illegal mining poses a serious threat to national security and the environment.
Speaking at the Regional Police Commanders’ Conference on Friday, March 21, COP Yohuno lamented the emerging crimes related to illegal mining, particularly in the Western North region.
He noted that there have been reports about armed criminals, linked to illegal mining operations, who have a brutally attacked innocent civilians, including forest guards, without justification.
“This lawlessness must not be allowed to continue” he said.
Given the escalating violence and environmental damage caused by illegal mining and its related crimes, COP Yohunu emphasised the need for urgent action to combat the problem.
He called on Regional Commanders to intensify their efforts and take immediate attention to ensure public safety.
“We are declaring war on crimes related to illegal mining and I expect every regional commander to take decisive action to bring perpetrators to justice,” he said.
