The Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, Prof Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, has directed that henceforth, all Ghana Health Service vehicles be insured by state agencies like the State Insurance Company and not by a private company.
He has further directed that all mechanical workshops located in eight regions of the country be operationalized to generate funds.
He gave these directives during a visit to the Ghana Health Service Central Mechanical Workshop at Tema, as well as the Tema Port Clinic and the Airport Clinic.
The visit by Prof Akoriyea, forms part of his efforts to reaffirm his commitment to collaboration, efficiency, and strengthening healthcare systems at the divisions and agencies under the service.
It is also aimed at offering him firsthand information on the realities on the ground. His first port of call was the Central Mechanical Workshop at Tema, where the service vehicles are repaired, serviced and more.
He inspected the facility and interacted with workers about the challenges hindering their work. While making some assurances as the first DG to ever pay them a visit in decades.
“One of the things I have decided on the spot is that all our fleet, unless on warranty, then they can do the servicing outside, apart from that, all servicing must be done here at the mechanical workshop and eight out of the regions 16 regions also have, they also have to do the same thing. And another directive that I have given is that, henceforth, any Ghana Health Service vehicle going for insurance should be with a government agency. Like the SIC. There are a lot of things we are now analyzing, you know this is a visit and I am picking the issues, when I get to the office, I will meet with my directors and other team members to do what we have to do to operationalise it,” he said.
He also visited the Tema Port Clinic as well as Terminal 3 at the airport, where he reaffirmed his commitment to staff welfare after interacting with the heads and staff of the health services.
“I have been to the Port Clinic as well as the Airport Terminal 3 and I am happy with what I have seen so far. There will always be challenges and we will address them based on priority. We will go back to the drawing board and look at all the challenges. But for sure staff welfare is my outmost priority and that will be taken into consideration,” he emphasized.
All healthcare workers were entreated to uphold professionalism at their various locations and be worthy ambassadors of the profession.
