
British-Ghanaian rapper, Michael Omari Owuo Junior, better known as Stormzy, has has been nominated to receive an honorary degree from the University of Cambridge, in recognition of his outstanding philanthropic work and contributions across multiple fields.
Stormzy is amongst eight individual nominated to receive a Doctorate in Law by the prestigious institution.
Later in 2021, the programme was extended with joint support from the HSBC UK which agreed to fund a additional ten students per year.
So far, 55 students have been supported by a Stormzy Scholarship and 2025 will see the largest group graduate so far,” the statement said.
According to the Cambridge University, the ‘Stormzy effect’ has been a major contributor to an increase in applications to Cambridge from Black students across the UK.
Stormzy, along with seven other distinguished individuals has accepted the University Council’s nomination to receive an honorary doctorate which is subject to final approval by the Regent House, the University’s governing body.
Stormzy, actor Simon Russell Beale and political activist Angela Davis are among 8 distinguished individuals who have been nominated to receive honorary degrees at Cambridge.
