A member of the Convention People’s Party, Kwame Jantuah has said President Mahama made the right decision to appoint a new Inspector General of Police (IGP) to replace Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.
Speaking in an interview on TV3’s New Day, March 14, he said President Mahama was only executing his Executive powers and has the right to appoint people he’s comfortable to work with.
Kwame Jantuah noted that with 40 years of experience in the police service, the new IGP COP Yohunu would make the police force better.
“The President changes who he feels he can work with…I don’t see what the hue and cry is about, the president has decided to change, he’s changed… I knew about the change of the IGP around January 10 and I knew it would be this guy from my own sources and more is going to come.
“The most important thing is that the police force would be better with the new IGP,” he stated.
According to Mr. Jantuah, there will be more replacement of heads of security institutions in the coming days.
“I don’t see anything wrong with that and there’s more to come. That of the military will also come. The president has to work with people he is comfortable with, period. The new IGP knows Dampare, they all worked together. So some of the things that the IGP is doing as a member of the IGP council if I can put it that way, he is part and parcel of the things that the former IGP did so he can choose to follow it, he can choose to add value to what they decided,” he said.
Commenting on the suit filed by Prof Kwesi Aning and others against the removal of Dampare as IGP, Kwame Jantuah questioned the motive behind the suit stating that past Presidents have also changed heads of security institutions.
“With regards to the suit when President Akufo-Addo changed the IGP of his time, was there any law suit? Did anybody say he didn’t have the right to do it? So, what’s all this about? I get the age and all that but the constitution allows extension, doesn’t it?” he remarked.
