In a remarkable display of dedication, 65-year-old philanthropist Alhaji Yakubu Ayaana has embarked on an extraordinary journey on foot from Kumasi to Accra, covering approximately 250 kilometers.
This incredible feat is his way of honouring Ghana’s President-elect, John Dramani Mahama, following his decisive victory in the December 2024 elections.
Alhaji Yakubu began his trek in Kumasi, the capital of the Ashanti Region, with the goal of arriving in Accra on January 7, 2025.
This date marks the swearing-in ceremony of President-elect Mahama, who will officially assume office.
Yakubu’s journey is more than a physical endeavour; it’s a heartfelt tribute to Mahama’s leadership and a celebration of Ghana’s vibrant democracy.
John Dramani Mahama, who previously served as Ghana’s president from 2012 to 2017, won the December 2024 elections with 56.55% of the vote. His return to office has sparked widespread hope for renewed progress and stability amid the nation’s economic challenges.
Alhaji Yakubu has a history of undertaking symbolic journeys. Notably, in 1997, he reportedly embarked on a walk to commemorate the second-term inauguration of former President Jerry John Rawlings.
In 1999, he spearheaded a 16-kilometre peace and health walk in Tamale on Independence Day, with the dual purpose of promoting national unity and encouraging healthy living.
