EC declares NPP’s Patrick Yaw Boamah winner of Okaikwei Central seat over NDC’s Baba Sadiq

The Electoral Commission (EC) has officially declared Patrick Yaw Boamah of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as the winner of the Okaikwei Central parliamentary seat following a final court-ordered recollation of votes from 31 polling stations.

The final results confirmed Boamah’s victory, securing his return to Parliament.

According to the EC’s final figures, Boamah garnered 21,099 votes, defeating the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Abdulai Abu Baba Sadiq, who polled 19,868 votes. The total valid votes cast stood at 40,467, with 198 rejected ballots??.

This declaration marks a significant victory for the NPP after weeks of legal battles over the highly contested seat.

Recollation process and legal orders

The High Court, on January 4, 2025, ordered the EC to collate and declare the final results for Okaikwei Central after discrepancies were identified in the initial declaration.

The recollation, conducted on January 5, 2025, confirmed Boamah’s victory, overturning the previous declaration in favour of Baba Sadiq.

The court found that the results from 31 polling stations were not fully accounted for during the initial collation, prompting the order for a fresh recount??.

Baba Sadiq’s short-lived victory

Baba Sadiq, a media entrepreneur and former CEO of 3Music Awards, was initially declared the MP-elect on December 9, 2024, with a slim margin of victory.

However, the NPP challenged the results, citing discrepancies in the collation process??.

The NDC had earlier filed an appeal against the court’s ruling, challenging the legitimacy of the recollation process. The party maintains that the initial results reflected the will of the people and has vowed to contest the decision in court??.
