The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has finalised its leadership appointments for the Minority Caucus in the 9th Parliament after a national council meeting of the party.
The NPP National Council on Thursday, December 2, announcement Alexander Afenyo-Markin, Member of Parliament for Effutu, as the Minority Leader.
Patricia Appiagyei, representing Asokwa, has been named Deputy Minority Leader, while Frank Annoh-Dompreh, the MP for Nsawam-Adoagyiri, takes up the role of Chief Whip. Additionally, Habib Iddrisu of Tolon and Davis Opoku Ansah (OPK) of Mpraeso have been designated as First Deputy Whip and Second Deputy Whip, respectively.
These appointments come as the NPP transitions to its new role in the Minority following the 2024 General Elections.
Afenyo-Markin, who previously served as Deputy Majority Leader and later as Majority Leader during the 8th Parliament, brings extensive experience to his new role. His leadership skills were widely acknowledged during the challenging tenure of the 8th Parliament, which had a hung composition and a Speaker from the opposition party.
The inclusion of Patricia Appiagyei as Deputy Minority Leader reflects the party’s commitment to promoting gender balance in leadership.
Calls for increased female representation within the NPP’s parliamentary ranks were echoed by the Majority Women’s Caucus, which lauded her selection as a step towards inclusivity.
Frank Annoh-Dompreh’s appointment as Chief Whip is expected to bring continuity and stability to the caucus. Having served as Majority Chief Whip in the previous parliament, Annoh-Dompreh’s experience in managing parliamentary affairs will be pivotal for the NPP’s Minority team.
The NPP’s newly appointed leadership team is set to steer the party through its Minority responsibilities in the 9th Parliament of Ghana.
