Ghanaian sprinter Benjamin Azamati is set to organize the third edition of the Ghana Junior Olympics, an event designed to discover and nurture young athletic talent.
The competition will take place at the University of Ghana Stadium on Thursday, December 26, 2024.
Azamati, in an interview with TV3, shared that his inspiration for the initiative came from his own challenges as a young athlete.
He emphasized the need to provide better support for talented Ghanaian youth, ensuring they have opportunities he lacked at the start of his career.
“This idea came about when I went to the US and saw how they introduce kids to athletics at a young age. By 18, many are already in the limelight. So, we thought it wise to do the same in Ghana, and that’s how the Ghana Junior Olympics event was born,” Azamati explained.
On the topic of sponsorship, Azamati revealed he is currently funding the event with support from his coach, some individuals, and fellow athletes based in the US. He also called on corporate organizations in Ghana to lend their support.
“For now, everything is from me, my coach, and some individuals. Athletes in the US are also contributing. This year, we’re expecting about 2,000 participants. We’re focusing more on kids, and even toddlers will have the chance to race,” he added.
Azamati first rose to prominence on the international stage at the 2019 African Games in Rabat, Morocco, where he won gold in the 100 meters with an impressive time of 9.97 seconds.
Through the Ghana Junior Olympics, Azamati hopes to inspire young athletes across Ghana and Africa to pursue their dreams and reach their full potential. His dedication, talent, and hard work continue to position him as a trailblazer in the world of athletics.
