Fifteen supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have been granted bail by the Osino District Court in the Eastern Region following their arrest in connection with an arson attack on an Electoral Commission (EC) office.
The incident occurred on December 10, 2024, in Asuboi, Ayensuano Constituency, during a protest by a group calling itself Ayensuano Concerned Youth. The protest followed the declaration of Ida Adwoa Asiedu as the Member of Parliament-elect for the constituency. The EC office was subsequently set ablaze.
The 15 suspects were charged with arson and each granted bail of GH?20,000 with one surety. They are expected to reappear in court on January 14, 2025.
His Worship Salifu Bugri Ayagiba granted the bail despite objections from the prosecution. Detective Chief Inspector Kamal Salifu Gumah, representing the prosecution, argued that ongoing investigations and the potential for interference by the suspects warranted their continued detention.
The defense counsel, however, assured the court that their clients were respected members of the community and would fully cooperate with the legal process. The court ultimately sided with the defense and granted bail.
