Campaign lead for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2024 elections, Prof Joshua Alabi has said the party projected to win the presidential election way before 2024.
Prof. Alabi noted that after the party lost in the 2020 elections, the NDC restructured itself and were prepared and positive of winning the 2024 elections.
Speaking in an interview on TV3’s Hot Issues, Prof Alabi explained that after the 2016 elections, the NDC managed to reduce the number of seats obtained by the NPP as well as the margin of votes in the 2020 elections and were heading for victory in 2024.
“I saw the victory after the 2020 elections coming into the 2024. In 2016, NDC made about 106 parliamentary seats while the NPP made 169 so we came to 2020.
“Looking at the 2016 and 2020 results and the difficulty we had in pushing through our 2020 results, I was confident that with some little work, we will wrestle power in 2024,” he told Kemini Amanor on Sunday, December 15, 2024.
Prof. Alabi stressed that a number of factors including covid 19 regulations and suppression of voters in its strongholds by the NPP contributed to the party’s loss in the 2020 elections
“In 2020, during the registration exercise, there were a lot of voter suppression in our strongholds especially in the Volta Region with military intervention.
“Some times in the hinterlands where we have the ewes and the Northerners there was some suppression.
“Again in 2020, we had covid and we were asleep per the regulations and everything we did not have to come out but the going machine (NPP) were running and campaigning. We were only released to campaign around June and July,” he added.
According to him, the 33% of votes obtained by the party in the 2024 elections in Ashanti Region which is the highest so far is the true reflection of the NDC’s support base in the Region as against the 26.5% and 23.32% in 2020 and 20216 respectively.
He believes vote rigging may have caused the party’s low percentage obtained in the Region in the previous elections.
