A joint task force, comprising officials from the Forestry Commission and the Ankasa Conservation Area, has disrupted the illegal trade of endangered species in the Wassa West District of the Western Region.
The operation, conducted at Bogoso market, aimed to enforce Ghana’s Wildlife Resource Management Act 1115 (2023), educate traders on conservation practices, and issue licenses to those trading in bush meat legally.
The initiative forms part of the annual closed-season monitoring, a critical period from August 1 to December 1 when hunting is restricted to allow wildlife populations to recover.
During the exercise, the team discovered unlicensed traders selling bush meat, including endangered species such as forest tortoises, pangolins, and primates like baboons. These species were confiscated, with Regional Wildlife Manager Richard Ofori Amanfo describing the situation as “deeply concerning.”
“Trading in these endangered species not only threatens biodiversity but also violates wildlife laws. We are committed to ensuring compliance and protecting Ghana’s wildlife heritage,” Mr. Ofori Manfo stated.
Grasscutter, the only species permitted for sale during the close season under license, was the predominant species observed. However, many traders were unaware of or non-compliant with licensing requirements.
The task force seized the opportunity to educate both traders and chop bar operators about sustainable wildlife practices and the importance of adhering to regulations.
The closed season, enforced under the Wildlife Resource Management Act, is essential for enhancing wildlife reproduction, as many species breed during this period. Officials urged the public to support conservation efforts and report illegal wildlife activities to authorities.
“This is not just about protecting wildlife; it’s about securing sustainable livelihoods for communities and ensuring the survival of species for future generations,” Mr. Ofori Amanfo added.
The exercise underscores Ghana’s commitment to wildlife conservation and sustainable resource management, marking a significant step in halting the exploitation of endangered species.
