The acting Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Ing. David Asamoah, has said Independent power producer (IPP), Sunon Asogli will resume operations in the coming weeks.
He revealed in an interview on Joy Newsfile, Saturday, November 23 that the company is working to resolve debts owed Sunon Asogli which caused its shutdown in October 2024.
Ing David Asamoah disclosed that ECG has intensified efforts to clear its debts to Sunon Asogli and other producers by implementing a weekly payment schedule instead of the monthly payment structure.
“Sunon Asogli has gone off because of debts. But the good news about Sunon Asogli is that they are going to be back in the coming weeks because we have almost resolved the issue that made them go off.
“We started paying them on a weekly basis, not monthly,” he noted.
The acting Managing Director (MD) of ECG further revealed what is mainly accounting for the debts owed the Independent Power Producers (IPP).
He explained that the volatility of the cedi to the dollar rates is hindering the company from fulfilling its financial obligations.
“The truth is that the majority of these debts are a result of a forex shortfall. Each month, just from forex, we lose about 37 million. So, if you get the money and pay, getting the dollars becomes a problem. Sometimes, you will even make a payment, and it will take days or weeks before the IPPs receive it because of the dollar,” he said on Joy Newsfile.
Management of Sunon Asogli Power (Ghana) Limited announced their suspension of operations in October 2024.
According to the company, this decision has been necessitated by the indebtedness of the Electricity Company of Ghana to them.
Mr Asamoah reiterated ECG’s commitment to fulfill its financial obligations to Independent Power Producers stressing that payments of the debts have begun already.
“I have had that conversation with them and to show good faith, we have started paying to show that we are just not talking but we are acting to what we have agreed going forward,” he said.
