MPs from Ghana, 5 other African countries to undergo training on Universal Periodic Review toolkit in Accra

Selected Members of Parliament from Ghana, Malawi, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Tanzania, and The Gambia will be attending a workshop in Accra, Ghana from today 12th to 13th November 2024.

The two-day workshop centered on the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) toolkit aims to equip MPs who are part of Parliamentary Caucuses on Freedom of Religion or Belief (FoRB) with the knowledge and tools necessary to engage effectively in issues of FoRB within the Universal Periodic Review process.

The workshop also seeks to empower MPs to play a stronger role in advancing human rights, particularly religious freedom, in their respective countries.

The UPR is a mechanism of the United Nations Human Rights Council that reviews the human rights records of all UN Member States. It is expected that by understanding the UPR process and knowing how to use the UPR toolkit, MPs would be able to make informed contributions that positively impact religious freedoms and human rights in their countries.

The workshop is also expected to enhance parliamentary oversight of efforts to address violations of religious freedom and related human rights.
