Technical Adviser at Finance Ministry affirms Bawumia’s 2.6m jobs claim

Technical Adviser for the Ministry of Finance, Dr. Abudu Abdul Ganiyu has affirmed the recent claim of creating 2.6 million jobs under the current administration by Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) Presidential candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

However, Dr. Ganiyu could not point to the specific source of data cited by Dr Bawumia.

While Dr. Ganiyu acknowledged the substantial employment efforts by the government and endorsed the job creation figures, he admitted that the Ministry of Finance does not have direct access to the source data confirming the 2.6 million jobs.

“I support the claims, but there is no specific data source available to us for these figures,” Dr. Ganiyu stated, pointing to a lack of documented data within the Ministry’s purview.

The Vice President’s claim has been a prominent part of the NPP’s campaign messaging, intended to highlight achievements in employment growth.

Dr. Ganiyu’s comments, however, may prompt calls for greater transparency regarding the tracking and reporting of such figures as public discussions on employment metrics continue.

During the same programme, renowned economist Godfred Bokpin emphasized the need for reliable data to substantiate the figure.

Bokpin expressed concerns about the lack of clear data sources to back the claim, urging a focus on job-rich growth strategies that directly translate to employment opportunities.

“I hold a different view,” he remarked, noting the importance of moving beyond the traditional assumption that economic growth automatically translates to job creation.

“The idea of trickle-down employment has not worked as expected, which is why economic policies need to be intentional,” he noted.
