AC Milan manager Paulo Fonseca has revealed how daunting it is to come up against Italian clubs as compared to European sides.
Fonseca’s comments follow AC Milan’s 3-1 triumph over Real Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday night. Malick Thiaw opened the scoring for the visitors before Vinicius Junior levelled the game for Real Madrid from the spot.
However, Real Madrid’s former player Alvaro Morata shot Milan ahead before Tijjani Reijnders sealed the points for the seven-time Champions League winners 15 minutes from the end.
The win against Real Madrid marked AC Milan’s second win of the Uefa Champions League league phase after recording a win against Club Brugge on matchday three.
Milan, who have struggled in Serie A this season, and find themselves in seventh place on the league standings, struggled at the weekend to secure a win against Monza, leaving Fonseca to accentuate how difficult it is to play in the Italian top-flight.
“Outside of Italy, no one understands how hard it is here. Monza play man-to-man, and Cagliari play man-to-man. European teams struggle against this; this doesn’t exist in other leagues. It is harder to play in Italy; games against Monza and Cagliari are more difficult,” he said in his post-game presser
AC Milan take on Cagliari on Saturday as they aim to climb higher up the league standings.
