For pretty much his existence on earth, Abedi Ayew, popularly known as Abedi Pele, has been nothing short of box office and quality. From his days as a teenager in secondary school (Ghana Senior High School, Tamale) to breaking through with Great Falcons where his nomadic career began, Abedi was always considered a potential big deal for Ghana.
That confidence was justified long-term as Abedi played out an illustrious career in Ghana, Benin, Qatar, France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland and with the Black Stars of Ghana.
As he turns 60 today, 3Sports picks out some of the standout moments in his illustrious career.
1. His iconic assist in the Champions League final
Abedi Pele, the Ghanaian football legend, etched his name in Champions League history during the 1992/93 campaign. His visionary pass to fellow African, Basile Boli secured a 1-0 victory for Marseille against AC Milan in the final, giving the French side their first Champions League title.
This decisive assist showcased Abedi Pele’s exceptional skill and creativity on the pitch. His precision and foresight allowed Boli to capitalize on the opportunity, sealing the triumph for Marseille. This momentous occasion marked the first time a French club had won the prestigious tournament.
2. Winning two Ligue 1 titles with Marseille
The Ghanaian football legend played a pivotal role in Marseille’s success during the early 1990s when he won two French Division 1 (now Ligue 1) titles with the club.
In the 1990-91 season, the attacking midfielder was a key figure in Marseille’s attacking trio who won the French outfit their seventh Ligue 1 title. Abedi made 35 appearances, netting five goals and securing three assists in the process.
Abedi secured his second Ligue 1 title in the 1991-92 season, where the Ghanaian international scored 12 goals and provided two assists in 36 matches.
3. Winning three African Player of the Year Awards.
Abedi Pele’s outstanding performances earned him the prestigious African Footballer of the Year award three consecutive times in 1992, 1993, and 1994, becoming the first African player to achieve such height.
Only two players have surpassed his record Samuel Eto’o (4 times) and Yaya Touré (4 times).
This recognition solidified his position as one of Africa’s finest footballers, showcasing his dominance on the continental stage.
4. Winning the African Cup of Nations with Ghana.
As a member of the Ghana national team, Abedi Pele was a part of the Black Stars squad which won Ghana’s fourth African Cup of Nations (AFCON) title. His vision, experience, and goal-scoring ability were instrumental in Ghana’s success, demonstrating his ability to perform on the biggest stage.
The midfielder scored three goals en route to Ghana’s road to AFCON glory, as the 1982 side remains the last batch to secure the coveted trophy for Ghana.
5. Winning BBC African Footballer of the Year
In 1992, Abedi Pele became the first Ghanaian to win the prestigious BBC African Footballer of the Year award.
This recognition highlighted his exceptional performances for both club and country where he won his second Ligue 1 title with Marseille and his first AFCON title with the Black Stars.
