Four years after President Nana Akufo-Addo symbolically broke ground for the construction of the Enchi-Elubo road, the much-anticipated project remains incomplete, leaving residents in dire straits.
Communities along the 71.25-kilometre stretch, including Kromokrom, Kwawu, Omanpe, Nkwanta Nos. 1 & 2, Jema, Boinso, Ngakain, and Asemkrom, continue to endure deteriorating road conditions.
The situation has severely impacted transportation, leading to significant post-harvest losses, as local farmers struggle to move their produce to market.
One such farmer, 38-year-old Isaac Dansu from Ngakain, expressed his frustration to 3news. “Farm produce are often left to rot due to the poor state of the road. The cost of transportation is extremely high, so I can’t afford to send my crops to market. Most times, my produce goes to waste.”
The Enchi-Elubo road was initially slated to be funded by COCOBOD and constructed by Chinese firm Top International Engineering Corporation (TIEC).
However, construction has stalled, with local authorities citing financial challenges.
The Municipal Chief Executive for the Aowin Municipality, Samuel Adu Gyamfi, confirmed that while work had begun, it halted due to funding constraints.
He noted that efforts are underway to use the Department of Feeder Roads’ Disaster Response Initiative Programme (DRIP) to reshape portions of the road, aiming to make it at least passable for residents.
The delay has sparked growing outrage from affected communities, with residents calling for swift government intervention. Some have said that they will refrain from casting their ballot in the 2024 general election should the road not be fixed.
