SHS students will soon require testimonial to qualify for university – Education Minister

The Ministry of Education says it is working towards achieving zero tolerance for indiscipline in Ghana’s Senior High Schools.

This is to curb the increasing rate of student violence.

Touching on the issue at the 2024 Ghana Teacher Prize event, the Minister of Education, Dr Osei Yaw Adutwum indicated that, measures have been put in place to address this.

“We want zero tolerance for indiscipline in our high schools. The era when students go on rampage destroying school properties will soon be over because we are going to be working with tertiary institutions to ensure that when you’re moving from high school the university or training college, you will provide a testimonial that will state your character. Indiscipline should not be tolerated anywhere in our schools”, he stated.

Concerns of growing indiscipline among senior high students, have, in recent time been topical in public discourse.

The recent one, being the stabbing of a student to death by his colleague, at O’reilly Senior High School.

In some instances, students have attacked their teachers and vandalized school properties to protest against some unfavourable decisions.

General Secretary of Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Thomas Tanko Musah pointed out that “the kind of behavior that students are displaying today is terrible. They beat teachers sometimes with the backing of their parents. These unfortunate incidents, if not curbed will create big problems in the years to come”.
