The Member of Parliament for Sefwi Bodi Constituency, Mr. Samson Ahi, has accused the government of taking advantage of cocoa farmers by paying them small amount of money as producer price compared to the huge world market price.
He said the former Mahama administration paid cocoa farmers 70 per cent of the world market price as producer price, in addition to the free fertiliser, cocoa roads and other incentives.
Mr. Ahi said the next NDC government would pay cocoa farmers a fair and reasonable producer price, adding the next Mahama administration would bring back the free fertilizer programme and the supply of improved seedlings, among others, to help cocoa farmers increase their yield.
He said this at Elluokrom in the Bia West Constituency during the Western North Regional campaign tour of the vice presidential candidate of the NDC, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, on Wednesday.
Mr. Ahi further said the next NDC government would also introduce a pension scheme for all cocoa farmers to support them when they reach the retirement age.
He therefore urged the electorates to vote for NDC presidential candidate, Mr John Dramani Mahama, in the upcoming December 7 general elections to enable him revive the cocoa sector and save the Ghana Cocoa Board from eventual collapse.
