CAF Media Officer Ibrahim Sannie Daara has proposed that the government should utilise tax revenues from sports betting to upgrade and maintain the country’s sports infrastructure.
This comes after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) withdrew its approval of the Baba Yara Stadium as a venue for Ghana’s home games in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers due to the poor conditions of the pitch.
The directive leaves Ghana in a desperate situation to find an alternative venue for the upcoming home match against Sudan in October.
Sannie Daara suggested redirecting betting tax revenues towards stadium maintenance and upgrades, rather than allocating them elsewhere.
“I think we should start changing our mentality. There’s a lot of money the government is making from sports betting in this country, and I’m sure one day the government might collect over a million dollars in sports betting taxes alone.
“Why can’t we allocate some of this money towards stadium maintenance and hire the right, qualified people to manage the facilities? Political appointments can be made in other areas, but we need technical experts to ensure our stadiums meet international standards,” he told JoyNews.
In the AFCON qualifiers, Ghana sit third in Group F with just a point after losing to Angola and drawing with Niger its first two games.
