Akufo-Addo calls for ECOWAS Standby Force to combat regional terrorism

President Akufo-Addo has called for the establishment of an ECOWAS Standby Force to address terrorism, piracy, and coups in West Africa.

Speaking at the Second International Defence Exhibition and Conference (IDEC) 2024, the President emphasized that no single country can tackle the growing threats of terrorism, violent extremism, organized crime, maritime piracy, and cyber threats alone.

“The establishment of the ECOWAS Standby Force will help us prevent coups, piracy, and terrorism in our sub-region,” President Akufo-Addo stated.

He stressed the importance of collaboration and intelligence sharing among nations, citing initiatives like the Accra Initiative and the ECOWAS Standby Force as essential frameworks for enhancing regional security.

“Initiatives like the Accra Initiative and the ECOWAS Standby Force are essential frameworks that enable us to work together more effectively. By building capacity, sharing intelligence, and fostering greater unity among our nations, we can create a safer and more secure Africa,” he said.

President Akufo-Addo also highlighted the need to address emerging threats such as cybersecurity and climate-induced security risks with the same urgency as traditional threats. He called for a holistic approach to building resilience against all forms of insecurity.

“I am confident that through unity, collaboration, and the unflinching commitment of our leaders, security forces, and citizens, we can make considerable progress in creating a continent that is not only secure but also prosperous and thriving. Let us continue to work closely with our regional and international partners, aligning our efforts with our shared priorities while respecting our sovereignty,” he added.

The Chief of the Defence Staff, Lt. Gen. Thomas Oppong-Peprah, underscored the need for military forces to upgrade their capabilities in response to recent technological advancements.

IDEC 2024 brought together key stakeholders from Africa and beyond to discuss contemporary security challenges facing the region.

The two-day event, which concludes on Thursday, August 29, aims to promote regional development and security by fostering civil-defense partnerships both regionally and internationally. It also seeks to improve combined combat operations and regional development initiatives by assembling Africa’s Chiefs of Army, senior officers, security agencies, global partners, and advanced solution providers.
