Diogo Jota and Mohamed Salah found the net as Arne Slot’s tenure as Liverpool head coach kicked off with a gritty 2-0 win over newly promoted Ipswich Town at a lively Portman Road.
Jota broke the deadlock just after the hour mark, finishing a well-worked Liverpool move involving Salah and an impressive Trent Alexander-Arnold. The Portuguese forward coolly side-footed Salah’s low cross past Ipswich keeper Christian Walton.
Liverpool doubled their lead just five minutes later when Salah scored from Dominik Szoboszlai’s pass, setting a Premier League record with his ninth opening-day goal.
Ipswich, playing their first top-flight match in 22 years, gave Liverpool a tough first half and came close to scoring through Jacob Greaves’ header and Omar Hutchinson’s low shot.
However, Liverpool came out stronger after the break. Jota missed an early chance, nodding Alexander-Arnold’s precise cross just wide, but he quickly redeemed himself with the opener. Salah then secured the win, handing Ipswich their first home defeat in nearly a year.
