The Krowor Constituency is situated entirely within the Ledzokuku-Krowor Municipal District of the Greater Accra Region with a population of 143,012.
The constituency’s capital, Nungua is a known area for their vibrant communities and cultural significance within the Region.
Nungua barrier is a very popular place and an integral part of the Krowor Constituency and the road leads to major places in the Greater Accra Region including Accra, Tema, Sakomono and others.
We have been engaging with daily commuters of the road such as drivers, sellers of the place and they tell us the construction has been going on for a very long time which is impeding their movement because it’s affecting the road that they use. The deplorable condition of the roads has been a constant source of frustration and hardship for the community.
“Our biggest challenge is our roads. Our MP said she’s waiting for her president to come into power before she can fix the road and it’s already with a contractor. Someone filled the road with stone chips, but it washed into the hole anytime it rains.” – A seller explained.
“They always convince us they will fix the road, but they never do it. Wo won’t agree time when they come to us again especially because we are in an election year.” A motorist intimated.
“The authorities want something bad to happen to us before they listen to our plight. We beg them, constructing the road will benefit the people but it’s in a terrible state.” A truck driver bitterly lamented.
“The Nungua barrier road is very bad and it’s affecting us the drivers. We plead with the government to work on it for us.” Another driver expressed concerns about the state of the bad roads.
The market women voiced their dissatisfaction on the deplorable state of the marketplace.
“We have made up our minds not to vote again because the government isn’t doing anything for us. We don’t have water and the market floods. It is just recently the got light.” Mary, assistant market queen explained.
“This place smells, and a nicely dressed pensioner even fell into the gutter because it was dug out without closing it back. I am to pay GHC2,600 cedis to AMA and internal revenue as taxes but they aren’t doing the needful and it is very disturbing.” Alice a clothing seller at the market also described the terrible situation of the market, especially their drains and how its choked with plastics mixed with water, breeding mosquitoes.
The fishermen folks of Nungua also expressed their concerns over the need for a sea defence system to protect their work area and community.
“All the MPs who come promised to do a sea defence for us, but nothing is happening. Not even one person amongst us will vote if nothing is done about our condition.” One of the fishermen also narrated.
According to the 2021 population census, the Krowor Constituency has a population of 143,012 with a higher voter turnout of about 101,825 during the 2020 elections.
The political landscape of the constituency has seen fluctuations between the NPP and the NDC since 1992. But the trend shows a shift in voter preference towards the NDC in the 2020 election, presenting Agnes Naa Momo Lartey who won with 41,850 votes against the NPP, Elizabeth Afoley Quaye with 32,704.
As the 2024 elections approach, several key issues are dominating the political discourse in the Krowor Constituency and according to residents, they will ultimately support and cast their votes for a leader who demonstrates a genuine concern for the wellbeing of the people.
