Member of Parliament for Sege, Christian Corleytey Otuteye is vowing to deploy every means at his disposal to halt the adoption of the joint parliamentary committee report on the mining lease granted to ElectroChem Ghana Limited in relation to the salt mining in the Ada Songhor lagoon.
The report which was laid in parliament on Wednesday has okayed the agreement saying there is no factual or legal basis to tinker with the 3 mining leases granted to the company.
Parliament in November 2020 ratified the mining agreement empowering the ElectroChem to undertake salt mining in the Ada Songor Salt lagoon for the next 15 years. The concession area is approximately 44,ooo acres.
Residents have resisted the project resulting in protests, attacks and the death of a community leader.
A joint parliamentary committee was tasked to look into the matter.
The committee was emphatic in its report that government cannot interfere with the agreement as there was no basis for any such move.
The report also recommended that:
? Electrochem should consider continuing with the allocation of some space to local miners
? This should be undertaken according to environmental laws
? Continuous stakeholder engagement
? Political pundits should desist from making political capital out of use of national assets
? Police should investigate death of Numo Korletey Agormedah who was killed in November 2023
Parliament is expected to debate and adopt the report today Thursday Juky 25 and already the lawaker for Sege vehemently disagrees with the committee.
He believes the report was put together in haste and without broader consultation with key stakeholders.
He told Beatrice Adu on 3 FM midday news that he do everything possible to ensure the report is rejected by parliament
He said “I am not at all satisfied with the report. If I have the means I will block it totally to be laid, not to even come to the floor. One of the clear reasons is, we are all key stakeholders who were asked to submit their concerns including me but in their reference, my name was not there, and my input was not there.
“Two, there are issues of compensation, people bought salt two or three years ago before this company came and you agreed that you will compensate them because the takeover comes with liabilities and all that, but they have not compensated some of these people who were hoping that Electrochem would refund.”
