Dr. Peter Partey Anti, executive director of the Institute of Education Stidies (IES) and a lecturer at the University of Cape Coast, said he was alarmed about the news of some students from Presec who staged the kidnapping of a colleague.
According to the Police statement issued on April 5, six persons including two adults, have been arrested in connection with the planned kidnapping.
The report noted that the “kidnappers” demanded a ransom amounting to GHC340,000, of which they succeeded in getting some GHC20,000 from the parents of the victim.
Reacting to the development on Ghana Tonight on Friday, April 5, Dr. Peter Anti called for increased moral training for students both in school and at home.
“I was a little shocked, I know that of course a lot of things are happening within the system, youths are so much attached to material wealth and shortcuts in making money. But I never thought that we would have students putting up such a show in their quest to get money and travel outside the country. I was a little bit alarmed.”
Asked whether the school authorities could have done something about the incident, Dr. Anti said, “It is a little bit tricky.”
“If the [school] authorities have their ears on the ground they might have heard of this preparation and I normally say that in our boarding school system, some of the things teachers used to do is to get their ears in every dormitory…but in recent times you don’t see these things happening because the students themselves are protective, they are protecting each other,” said Dr. Anti.
He said the educational system seems to pay attention to knowledge students must acquire at the expense of their moral growth which hinders the total development of the students.
“We are paying little attention to their moral growth, their attitude, what we call the affective and behavioural system. We are not paying so much attention to it and I think this is a clear indication that we are not getting the total development of our students right,” he told Alfred Ocansey.
Police arrest 4 PRESEC students for faking the kidnapping of their mate
It would be recalled that on April 3, a 17-year-old student from the Presbyterian Boys Senior High School (PRESEC), Legon, was allegedly kidnapped.
Reports indicated the young boy was returning from school to Obuasi, where he resides, on March 28, 2024, when he was abducted.
He was going home to spend the vacation. Disturbing photos sent to the family show the student had been harmed.
The matter, according to a Modern Ghana publication, was reported by the parents of the victim to the police CID headquarters and PRESEC officials.

The report further had it that authorities of the school had shown little interest in the case with the explanation that the incident occurred outside the campus and as such, not much could be done from their end.
