The Ghana Football Association has confirmed that goalkeeper David Akologo and midfielder Mohamed Diomande will not participate in the Black Stars’ international friendly matches against Nigeria and Uganda.
Akologo, who was born in Ghana and previously served as a U-20 goalkeeper, accepted an invitation from Bolivia, where he has been playing since 2020 before being included in Ghana’s 26-man squad for this month’s games.
Similarly, Rangers midfielder Diomande received a call-up to the Ivory Coast U-23 team before Ghana extended an invitation to him. Although he lacks familial ties to Ghana, Diomande spent seven formative years at Ghana’s Right to Dream Academy in Akosombo.
“As things stand, those two players [David Akologo and Mohamed Diomande] will not be part of the squad, and this goes beyond football,” stated Ghana FA communications manager Henry Asante Twum on Asempa FM.
Regarding Diomande’s situation, Twum noted, “Diomande was faced with a dual selection situation, being named in both Ghana’s and Ivory Coast’s U-23 squads. He expressed his need for time to decide as he is eligible to represent either country.”
Regarding Akologo, Twum acknowledged the possibility of his eventual inclusion, stating, “As for Akologo, while he affirmed his commitment to Ghana, given his past with Bolivia, we must wait and see how the situation evolves in the future.”
Ghana is scheduled to play Nigeria on Friday, March 22, followed by a match against Uganda four days later.
