Ghana’s 100m record holder Benjamin Azamati insists that the 4x100m relay team is keen on defending their title at the 2023 African Games at the University of Ghana Stadium in Legon.
Azamati was part of Ghana’s 4x100m relay team that won gold in the 2019 African Games. Athletics is expected to start in the 2023 edition on 18th March, and Azamati is glad after returning to where it all started for him on a professional level.
Speaking to 3Sports in an exclusive interview ahead of the Games, Azamati expressed his belief in his team making the podium and improving their personal times at the Games, as they seek eventual places in the 2024 Olympic Games.
“Yes and absolutely. We are looking forward to defending our title and I think looking back from five years ago, I think we have all improved. We are all way better athletes now and we are ready to defend our title. Of course running a good personal time here qualifies you for the Olympic Games so of course I have an eye for that and I’m looking forward to doing it,” he said.
Although he is Ghana’s record 100m holder, Azamati is yet to win an individual medal for the nation at the African Games, and will be hoping he can turn the tide in his favor this time round.
