A professor of economics at New York University, Professor Yaw Nyarko, says Ghana must rethink and invest in its agricultural sector to enhance its growth prospects.
He stressed that this was critical because of the great potential of the agricultural sector.
Speaking at the Achimota Speaks Forum on Thursday, November 16, 2023, Professor Nyarko noted that “Agriculture, I think, is where a lot of potential exists.”
“…That is a place where there is great history, a place where we can get inspiration…I think it’s a place with a lot of promise. Ghana could be a place that is exceptional in agriculture, and we should think about it.”
He further indicated, for instance, that if there were national markets for other crops like maize, soya, and sorghum, revenue generation for such crops could be enhanced as it was being done for cocoa.
Professor Nyarko also stressed the need for more commodities exchange in the country, just like other countries have done.
He added that “These markets will create consistent demands. Farmers will benefit because they will get a consistent market.”
