The Bimbilla Hospital in the Nanumba North Municipality of the Northern Region has been adjudged the best-performing hospital in the region.
This was announced at the maiden edition of the Ghana Health Service Excellence Award for the year 2022 held in Tamale.
The award is the first of its kind, having been launched in December of last year.
The management of the Bimbilla Hospital had been accused of maladministration by some youth in the area in recent days.
However, the managers of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) disagreed with the youth and adjudged the facility as the best-performing hospital in the entire Northern Region.
The Medical Superintendent of the Bimbilla Hospital, Dr Barhama Adam, who was the target of the youth’s accusations, was also adjudged the most outstanding staff of a secondary-level hospital in the region.
At the award ceremony, held in Tamale in the Northern Region, the Northern Regional Director of Ghana Health Service, Dr Braimah Baba Abubakari, congratulated the award winners and called on the health service staff to rise above criticism. He asked for a renewed sense of purpose and urgency in their work.
“As leaders, we are faced with choices every day, choices that impact lives. Yet we find ourselves here grappling with issues of unethical leadership practices. The manipulation of service coverage data, the laxity in supporting routine service delivery, and failure to adhere to grievance procedures erode the very foundation of trust and accountability. Leadership in essence is a moral task, and as leaders, it is our bounden duty to practice ethical governance. The world is watching, and history will judge us not by our words but by our deeds,” he stated.
He urged the health service workers to be change agents in their chosen careers.
“Let us not be hearers but doers. Let’s rise to the occasion with a renewed sense of purpose and urgency. Let us return to our respective roles with the conviction that we shall overcome. Overcome we must the challenges of unethical practices, the weaknesses in our public health units, and the gaps in our disease detection and treatment. Let’s work hand in hand with our stakeholders to build a health system that is not just strong, but exemplary.”
The winner of the award for most outstanding staff, Dr Barhama Adam, who is also the Medical Superintendent of the Bimbilla Hospital, was recently chased out of his office by some youth in Bimbilla. He was full of gratitude to the Almighty Allah for the award.
He said that the award is a result of commitment and dedication, and he dedicated it to the staff of the Bimbilla Hospital, who he said are the brains behind the award. He urged them to continue with the hard work.
“I am not surprised to see that the hospital has been adjudged the best in the region, because that is what we stand for. The hospital stands for the best, and I am so excited that at the end of the day, the authorities concerned have seen what we have done and actually honored the hospital for the work that we have been doing. I think this award is an award of sacrifice, commitment, and excellence. I must say that the staff of the Bimbilla Hospital are so excited to be recognized for the hard work, and myself, I am very happy and give thanks to God Almighty for the honor done to the hospital. I dedicate the award to the staff of the hospital,” he stated.
On his own award, Dr Barhama said it is a result of commitment and trust in God in whatever one does.
“I have always told people that the work we do is about commitment and belief in God. We have done our best for the facility, and this award has actually come to confirm what we have done. The entire hospital staff deserve commendations,” he said.
On the issue of the youth’s actions, Dr Barhama said that it was due to a lack of proper information. He enumerated some of the hospital’s achievements over the past years. He said that he has forgiven the youth for what they did and urged the staff not to be detracted by that.
“The issue of the hospital being in the media is most unfortunate. It is because some people lack some information and they turn to behave in a particular way. I think when they get to know the true facts, they will realize that what they did was wrong. I am dedicating the award to the entire staff of the hospital. I would like to let them understand that their sacrifice and commitment have been recognized by the nation. They should forget about whatever happened in the past and move on. Our commitment is to save lives.”
