As the December 2024 elections approach, calls for peaceful elections have intensified. In the North East region of Ghana, where conflicts often arise from political, chieftaincy, and land disputes, young people are mobilizing their communities to support peaceful actions.
The North East Regional Youth Network, together with African Students For Interfaith Tolerance (ASFIT) supported by Empowerment for Life Ghana (E4L Ghana Program), convened a Regional Dialogue for young people and other stakeholders on ensuring peaceful elections in the region.
The event which brought together participants from across the region to share ideas, best practices, and strategies for promoting sustainable peace and development in the region took place on the 27th of November, 2024 in Walewale, North East region.
According to Mr. Issah Toha Shamsoo, President of the North East Regional Youth Network, “This regional dialogue has allowed us the opportunity to convene participants from across the region with one objective: call for peace, and develop strategies to prevent political violence and instability.”
Participants expressed appreciation for the opportunity to participate in the dialogue and called for more spaces of engagement to discuss relevant issues of concern of the region. “We need to continue to engage for the peace and development of our region.” noted by a participant at the regional dialogue.
Civil society organizations (CSOs) and the National Peace Council have implemented various initiatives to sustain Ghana’s peace and stability beyond the 2024 elections.
