Ghanaian actress Oheneyere Mercy Asiedu Agyeman Duah has extoled the celebrated highlife musician, Akosua Agyapong, describing her as a role model for Ghanaian youth.
Speaking in an interview with Felicia Osei on Onua FM’s mid-morning show, Adwuma Adwuma, Mercy Asiedu said Akosua Agyapong is currently the only female highlife artiste in Ghana and should be celebrated.
“Akosua Agyapong is a beacon of hope for young women in the highlife genre. We need to celebrate her and learn from her journey,” Mercy stated on Tuesday, October 8.
She expressed her concern over the limited participation of women in highlife music, saying, “It’s disheartening to see that women are not fully engaging in this vibrant industry. We need more female voices to be heard.”
Dr. Asiedu’s remarks underscore the importance of female representation in a genre that has historically been male-dominated.
As the conversation continues to resonate, many are calling for more platforms and opportunities for female artistes in Ghana’s music scene.
Dr. Asiedu concluded, “I am committed to encouraging more women to step into the spotlight, as their contributions are invaluable to the future of highlife music.”
